Through Rushing Waters-A Book Review

Through Rushing Waters, By Catherine Richmond, was a lovely book. I loved the historical setting that she wrote the story in and was very captured through out.
I enjoyed the main character, Sophia Makinoff, who had a witty sense of humor and lots of spuck. Sophia was a native born Russian, who came to America as a little girl, and eventually became a teacher. She had aspirations of becoming a congressman's wife, but was jilted, and heartbreakingly by her fellow teacher and roommate. Sophia then decides to sign up as a missionary to teach in China, but they don't send her there, they send her to teach the Ponca tribe in the Dakota Territory. Quickly she falls in love with the quiet, peaceful people, who are trying to save their land. And works hand in hand with a carpenter, Will, who has the same burden for these people.

I really enjoyed this book. It has been a long time since I have read a book that included the sad history of what some of the indians had to endure. It was upsetting to see how much contempt some of the American people had for the indians. Some were good indians that wanted to have a good, quiet life. Yet, politicians of American loathed them, and treated them like animals. Will and Sophia took to their cause, and in the end, some good would come out of their work. Of course, working together, Will and Sophia fall in love. Which I am glad, they made a really good team.

Once again, I really enjoyed this book. There was a quote in the book that really stuck out to me. "Ignore the rushing water.....Ignore everything that tries to pull you under or knock your feet out, or obsures your view. Plant your feet on the solid rock." Excellent quote that can be applied to our lives. We have the solid rock to depend on. I love the basis of the book, and love that quote! You will not be disappointed in this book. Great read!
